Our Story

Our story is one of attention to detail, challenging the status quo and never settling for less when there’s potential for so much more.

It all began in 2015 when founder Dean Dunning noticed a common flaw on homes across the country. Many had flat roofs and solar systems were being installed at the same angle. The panel inclination was incorrect for the latitude, significantly reducing its effectiveness. Concerned for solar’s reputation in New Zealand and a sea of disappointed customers, Dean set out to remedy this common issue and established an expert solar provider for the Otago region.

Over the years, solar technology has evolved, while different panels, batteries and installers have appeared. We’ve invested our resources in the research and development of quality products to empower energy partners with relevant, unbiased, up-to-date information and the best solar systems available.

Today, Wanaka Solar are experts in Grid Tied Solar Systems, Hybrid Solar Systems and Off Grid installations. Since inception, we have installed over 130 Grid Tied systems and over 20 Off Grid, the equivalent of over 500kWp installed capacity.

Trained as an electrician , going on to study renewable energy. Dean became increasingly concerned about the quality of solar installations being installed by untrained people. He managed to find a great team to help him install high end renewable systems. Dean enjoys getting out rock climbing and spending time with Sam, when she isn't walking the dogs.

There is no need to introduce Hannah because you probably already know her. This Born and bred Hawea Gal knows everyone in town! With the help of 5 x whiteboards and her sidekick Duke (Hannahs dog), this super organised lady will ensure everything is in place already for the installers to work their magic on your roof. When all is complete and you are generating your own power you may be lucky enough to see Hannah showing off her drone skills to get the winning shot of your solar.

Bringing a wealth of knowledge from across the ditch. Liam is a great addition to the Team. Liam has had 10 years of experience designing and installing solar systems in Queensland. He has a passion for renewable energy and high-quality work. Liam moved to Wanaka to spend more time in the outdoors and escape city life. He now enjoys long walks on the beach, taking pictures of the Wanaka tree and wandering into avalanche terrain.

With the help of 100 eggs a week, Jake has no problem getting those panels on your roof. If he isn’t in the gym in the morning, in the gym in the evening or in the gym in the weekends you may see Jake in the saddle enjoying the scenic routes on his bike. Jake has an electrical background and has been installing solar in Canterbury. We are very lucky that he decided to flee the big smoke and make Wanaka his home!

Originally from Scotland. Stacey could not believe how strong the sun was in New Zealand. She thought all this energy must be good for something. This led her to Wanaka Solar. She is now well on her way to learning the art of installing high-quality solar systems and completing her electrical apprenticeship.

Sam’s days are now split Between raising the future CEO of Wanaka Solar and ensuring the bills get paid on time. Sam is your go-2 for any account needs but will jump in to help with any solar inquiries and questions. In her spare time Sam likes taking the dogs to the vets, walking the dogs and taking photos of the dogs.

Gabby came from a hospitality background. We knew straight away that she would be a perfect fit for the office crew and that’s not just because she can make good coffee or take out first position in a board game. Gabby is your go to for any general enquiries and installation updates. When Gabby isn’t learning the world of Solar PV she is pitched on a remote location in her rooftop camper, working on her latest sewing creation.

Sam would travel up and down the mountain every day until one morning he looked out the window and had an epiphany. Sam realised it's not just an epic sunrise, there’s a lot we can gain from the sun! Lucky for us, that’s when he peddled through our door and became a part of the Wanaka Solar team. Sam is one of our Solar Installers and when he isn’t on your roof, he is washing his bike, oiling his chain and exploring the local trails on his bike.

We're Growing

Due to the increased demand for solar, we now have three branches across Otago and one in Christchurch to better serve our local communities. As a group we have been at the forefront of solar innovation for the past five years and we are excited to have expanded our quality approach across Christchurch, Queenstown and Dunedin.

Individually each company is run by true locals. So we’ve always got boots on the ground that are just around the corner whenever you need us. But together we support each other with knowledge, skills and buying power as we champion a carbon-neutral future for New Zealand.
